Have U Heard attended the debut of Kate Spade New York’s Fall Fashion collection at Bloomingdale’s yesterday, September 16, 2009.    Hosting the event was style guru, Tim Gunn.  After traveling for more than two hours (due to being stuck in traffic)  Tim took the time to speak to Have U Heard.  This was the first clue of what a great, down to earth person Tim Gunn is – and let’s not forget funny.

Here is what Tim Gunn had to say:

Have U Heard:  Let’s talk about Fashion Week.  How was it??

Tim Gunn:  I only went Saturday and Sunday and then my day job takes priority.  I love being there but I don’t need to be there.  I’m not  writing about the shows, I’m not  buying clothes, I’m not a stylist – so I  just take up space and air.  I go to the shows the people to whom I am loyal to and I politely decline everyone else.

Have U Heard:  Did you seen any fashion trends??

Tim Gunn:  The shows had fewer looks than I am used to seeing… which means smaller inventory.  Translucent, very airy textiles and at the same time a lot of classic tailoring.  Designers are thinking about items that will have staying power in a woman’s wardrobe.

Have U Heard:  What was your favorite from the fashion shows??

Tim Gunn:  The good classic dresses were in abundance.  Women look great in dresses and I hope more women are wearing them.

Have U Heard:  Do you have a favorite piece from Kate Spade’s Fall Collection??

Tim Gunn:  I love all of them…..but I am particularly partial to a beautiful organic, pink, mini-sequined dress.  I’m crazy about it.  If I were a woman – I would be wearing it right now!!

Have U Heard:  When it comes to project runway – what would viewers be surprised to learn about from behind the scenes?

Tim Gunn:    The time on the show is real.  There are no breaks - we go, go, go and by day 24 everyone is ready to kill everyone else.  By day 25 we are a nice happy little family again.

Have U Heard:  What do you think about Christian Siriano designing for Payless??

Tim Gunn:  I think it’ thrilling.  His collection is going to Saks.  The shoes are from Payless.  I think it’s fabulous to mix it up.  We have our first lady to thank for that. You can go high – you can go mid-level.

Have U Heard:  What’s the worst fashion trend you have ever seen? 

Tim Gunn:   CROCKS!!   Hands down. 

Have U Heard:  If you could choose a celebrity to give a fashion makeover to – who would it be?

Tim Gunn:    She is definitely the smartest star in Hollywood.  She is the first lady of Hollywood.  She is an Oscar winner.  She’s stunning, she has a gorgeous figure.  She is Meryl Streep.  She’s made a decision that she is not a fashion person.  We all should be responsible for how we present ourselves to the world especially on the red carpet at the Oscars.  Sometimes she gets it right and sometimes she doesn’t.  She doesn’t care when she doesn’t get it right and I do.

Have U Heard:  Which celebrity always gets fashion right??

Tim Gunn:  Angelina Jolie.  She knows what’s appropriate.  She knows what she looks good in.  She follows the principals of silhouette, proportion and fit being your friends.

Have U Heard:  What movie or television show has the biggest impact on fashion rt now??

Tim Gunn:  Mad Men.  I am interested in people with experience, navigating the world.

Tim Gunn is definitely humor filled.  After speaking with him, seeing him host the fashion show and watching him on Project Runway I beg to differ about the stuffy, old fart.
