Exclusive: Kate Winslet on the Set of Mildred Pierce

Kate Winslet was spotted on the set of Mildred Pierce in Merrick, N.Y. on June 4, 2010.

Living very close to Merrick, I made a visit to the set where I was able to get a first hand glimpse of the movie shoot and a behind the scenes look at the set. To make the set seem like it was the 1930′s and in California, fake palm trees, fake lemon trees and lamp posts were brought to the set.

The roofs of the homes were replaced, a door with a fake kitchen was placed in the front of one of the houses and California license plates were placed on the cars. One of the onlookers, who happened to be a car buff, pointed out that while the license plates were California plates the registration was from New York.

Mildred Pierce is a remake of the 1945 movie starring Joan Crawford. The movie is about a divorced single mom, Mildred Pierce (played by Kate Winslet) who decides to open a restaurant business, which tears at the already-strained relationship with her ambitious elder daughter, Veda (played by Evan Rachel Wood).

Check out the photos from the set after the jump!!

I was there on set many days working for the production.
The roofs were replaced at the cost of $30,000 per roof.
Many homes on Henry Street have similar roofs because
they all had tile style roofs originally in 1927 when
they were built by Fox Movie Studios.

Nice pictures. I live on this block however and the roofs were not replaced.
