Summer is winding down (can you believe it?!), which means it’s time to ramp up for September’s National Preparedness Month, encouraging us to take simple steps to prepare for emergencies in our homes, businesses, schools and communities. It has been a year since Hurricane Irene hit New York City and reminded all of us that emergencies can happen at any time. One of the most pressing needs for New Yorkers before and during Hurricane Irene was access to timely, accurate information about essential City services, transportation disruptions and other important details.
As part of National Preparedness Month, OEM is urging New York residents to sign up for Notify NYC, the City’s official emergency notification system. Subscribers receive text messages, e-mails, phone calls or Tweets about significant citywide events, as well as smaller events happening in their own neighborhoods. These notifications cover topics such as severe weather, school closures, subway disruptions, and traffic advisories in all areas of the city.
Notify NYC is critical in keeping New York City residents, families, and commuters informed, and it’s completely free! Anyone can sign up and customize the alerts they would like to receive by visiting www.nyc.gov/notifynyc or following @NotifyNYC .
Also, if you Like the official OEM Facebook page, you will be entered to win an iPad!

We keep food and water for 2 weeks on hand, flashlights, candels, hand warmers, blakets, we keep it all our shed in case the house isnt useable anymore. Lived here 4 years now and so far a volcano has erupted 40 miles from here, countless countless earthquakes, 3 week ago had a hurricane come through with 130 mph wind so was without power for 5 days. Forest fires, had one 1/2 mile from house. so yeah we are prepared.
