This is some exciting news for Carrie Underwood and her fans!
NBC has scored the country singer for the role as Maria von Trapp in a remake of the classic musical The Sound of Music. This remake will air as a three-hour special broadcast event based on the original Broadway musical.
The telecast is set to air in 2013 and will be produced by Craig Zadanand Neil Meron, the men behind NBC’s Smash.
The network’s chairman told US Weekly:
“Speaking for everyone at NBC, we couldn’t be happier to have the gifted Carrie Underwood take up the mantle of the great Maria von Trapp. She was an iconic woman who will now be played by an iconic artist.”
The Sound of Music documents the true story of an aspiring nun who falls in love with widower Captain von Trapp after she is tasked with caring for his seven children. It first appeared on Broadway in 1959, which the movie version coming out in 1965, which starred Julie Andrews.
