At the end of last week’s episode that President Grant has awoken from his coma after being shot in the head. We have the complete recap from last week’s episode here.
While in Olivia’s home Senator Davis let’s her know that he will have a meeting with acting President Langston in the morning where she will inform the cabinet that the letter of reinstatement from President Grant is a forgery. The Senator states he wants to help Olivia but she doesn’t see it that way. Instead taking his accusations as an insult she breaks off the relationship. After the Senator leaves, Olivia calls Cyrus (White House Chief of Staff), “we have a problem”.
In a flashback we see then Governor Grant not do well in a debate. He learns that he will need a clean sweep of several states to have a chance at winning the election (10 points down). Hollis Doyle, Justice Verna Thornton, Cyrus, and Olivia are present when this news is given. The plan to rig the election is hatched by Hollis on the plane ride after.
Mellie suggests that Grant III should use his “political capital”, his father. For some reason though, Grant III doesn’t want to. Olivia of course convinces him. Grant II does show for a practice debate and has no problem taking the spotlight, this seems to irritate his son to no end and although he might be able to help the campaign, Grant III wants no part of him. Why might you ask? Apparently his father was caught sleeping with prostitutes which ended his political career, not to mention what it did to the relationship between father and son.
