Royals Pilot Recap: Stand and Unfold Yourself 3/15/15
In E!’s new scripted drama, The Royals, a fictional British Royal family set in modern day London, who inhabit a world of opulence and regal tradition that caters to any and every desire, but one that also comes with a price tag of duty, destiny and intense public scrutiny. After tragedy strikes the family, the King wants to disband their rule, but the rest of the family is torn, and they have to make a decision on what will happen sooner or later.
The episode kicks off as the Queen, Helena gets briefed on various events of the day. Prince Liam talks to his friends and a crowd of fans alike in a bar. He plays his audience as he woes a young woman, Ophelia- turns out they know each other- and live in the same castle. Ophelia asks to go somewhere his audience won’t follow. Meanwhile, Princess Eleanor dances at a club with a girlfriend. Sex, drugs and hip-hop is their way to go. The next morning, King Simon reads tabloid headlines about his daughter and is less than thrilled, to say the least. His friend Truman arrives to tell him worse news. Meanwhile, Helena calls in Eleanor to berate her for her behavior, but Eleanor isn’t hearing any of it. She blurts that her Robert, is dead. The Queen is stunned. Now Liam is next in line. Elsewhere in the castle, Ophelia checks with head of security, her father. He’s disappointed in her. Liam goes to see how Eleanor is holding up. She’s upset because she had promised to call Robert that previous night and hadn’t gotten around to it. Liam tries to assure her by saying Robert loved her most. Both agree. They hear barking outside and go to see the visitors- two chatty obnoxious type girls, who are welcomed into the castle with no issue. They hug the siblings, then go inside. Ophelia goes to see Liam to apologize for his loss. They address having sex the last night- neither supposedly knew who the other was and are relatively okay with the outcome, but agree to move on quickly. Ophelia isn’t happy that the Queen knows though- “the Queen knows everything.” Simon and Helena look on at Robert’s casket later, but when they accidentally have an audience, the Queen sobers up because queens aren’t allowed to grieve.
A couple of days later, Robert’s funeral is televised. The siblings look on, along with their uncle, Cyrus. Eleanor makes a comment that Cyrus’s out for the throne and he’s one step closer to getting it. Now he just has to kill Liam. Cyrus adds that he also has to wait for her to OD. It turns out the girls from before are his daughters. Liam leaves to visit Ophelia. He asks her out, despite her teasing that he did so at a funeral. She accepts. Helena overhears it and gives him a hard time over it. They leave the castle to go out into the yard for the public addressing of the funeral. Liam talks to the press about it. Shortly after, it turns out his speech was mostly scripted, and Helena’s furious about it. Liam calls her on being awful on that day of all days, and Helena insults Ophelia to boot. Eleanor calls Robert lucky for dying and escaping all of the drama that comes with being part of that family.
