Michael Sam is best known as the first football player to come out as gay. Sam was the seventh-round draft pick for the St. Louis Rams, just making it as a draft pick when he was selected as the 249th overall pick out of 256 overall during the 2014 draft rounds.

Born and was raised in Hitchcock, Texas, Sam attended the University of Missouri on a football scholarship. Michael made history last year when the star college football player came out as gay ahead of the NFL draft, making him the first openly LGBT player to be drafted in any major American sport.

As a college player at the University of Missouri, Sam was named a first-team All-American and Co-SEC Defensive Player of the Year. Sam’s bravery earned him the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 2014 ESPY Awards. In 2014, he was named one of GQ Magazine’s Men of the Year and was a finalist for Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year. He recently became engaged to his boyfriend, Vito Cammisano.

Michael is partnered with professional dancer, Peta Murgatroyd on Dancing With the Stars Season 20. In it’s 10th year of the show, Dancing With the Stars has had a number of professional athletes. Some of the football players who have been on the hit reality series have even won Dancing With the Stars. Emmit Smith won season 3 of DWTS and Hines Ward won season 12 of the reality show. Other athletes who have participated in the show and have won the mirror ball trophy include Apolo Ohno, a speed skater and Helio Castroneves, a race car driver, who was previously married to actress, Ashley Judd. Meryl Davis, a gold medal winner in the winter Olympics for professional pairs skating also took home the mirror ball trophy.
