Ben Affleck Admits He Was Embarrassed by His Family Owning Slaves
Ben Affleck is speaking out about the revelation that his ancestors owned slaves. After appearing on the PBS show, “Finding Your Roots,” it was discovered that one of the actor’s distant relatives was an owner of slaves. Affleck’s emails lobbying to have the information removed from the show were leaked online, causing a stir. After all, why would he want it removed from the television show? He is not responsible for his ancestors actions.
Affleck has taken to Facebook to speak about the incident and admit he was embarrassed by the fact that his family owned slaves, saying,
I didn’t want any television show about my family to include a guy who owned slaves. I was embarrassed. The very thought left a bad taste in my mouth.
Affleck agreed with Have U Heard’s initial report about the incident where we stated that Affleck is not responsible for his ancestors actions.
I regret my initial thoughts that the issue of slavery not be included in the story. We deserve neither credit nor blame for our ancestors and the degree of interest in this story suggests that we are, as a nation, still grappling with the terrible legacy of slavery. It is an examination well worth continuing. I am glad that my story, however indirectly, will contribute to that discussion. While I don’t like that the guy is an ancestor, I am happy that aspect of our country’s history is being talked about.
Affleck isn’t the first celebrity to have ancestors who owned slaves, nor will he be the last. Thankfully, he realizes it is not something he should have hidden from the public.
What do you think about Affleck apologizing for what he did? Should he have been embarrassed about his ancestors actions or as he said, he should not have been blamed for his ancestors decisions?
