Actor, Ben Affleck recently won a Humanitarian Award and has organized humanitarian work in Africa, so the fact that his ancestors were slave owners and he wanted to keep it a secret is not surprising.

It seems that Affleck is ashamed of his ancestors and would prefer to keep some of what they did a secret. Unfortunately the Oscar Winning Director should have thought of that before he appeared on the PBS show, “Finding Your Roots.” It was discovered that Affleck’s ancestors were slave owners, something Affleck was not happy about. He even requested that piece of information be left out of his story.

Unfortunately for Affleck, Sony’s emails were hacked several months ago and while his name was not explicitly stated, an email has surfaced referring to the Batman actor and the fact that he requested the details of his family being slave owners to be omitted from the show.

Affleck was not directly involved in the email chain but in the emails, the host of the show, Henry Louis Gates asked the CEO of Sony, Michael Lynton how he should handle a request by Affleck. He stated,

“Here’s my dilemma: confidentially, for the first time, one of our guests has asked us to edit out something about one of his ancestors — the fact that he owned slaves. Now, four or five of our guests this season descend from slave owners, including Ken Burns. We’ve never had anyone ever try to censor or edit what we found. He’s a megastar. What do we do?”

Lynton told him he should take it out and after going back and forth the two seem to decide censoring the information is a bad idea and while Affleck was never referred to directly he was referred to as a “megastar” and “Batman.” Ironically, the segment aired Oct. 14 and the fact that Affleck’s ancestors were slave owners was never mentioned. Instead, Gates focused on the occultist, a Revolutionary War relative and Affleck’s mother, who was a “freedom rider” in 1964.

What are your thoughts about this – should Ben Affleck have tried to cover up the fact that his ancestors were slave owners. We can’t be responsible for others actions so why would Affleck try to cover this up. He wasn’t even born then.

In our opinion, Affleck was definitely misguided.
