This week’s episode of Criminal Minds opens with an evening aerial view of the BAU Headquarters. With each passing moment, the rain becomes increasingly heavier, you can hear the raindrops bouncing off the window pane in the interrogation room. An agitated Larry Merrin is standing up and yelling, “I didn’t do this!” repeating this phrase until Hotch walks into the room.

This session begins with calming Larry down; once Larry is somewhat relaxed, he closes his eyes, and begins to remember being at home with his wife Tabitha. Larry tells Hotch, the two are alone in their bedroom when Tabitha is distracted by a noise from downstairs. She tells her husband to go down and check out the sound. At first, Larry was reluctant, but a few minutes later, a joyful Larry is seen running down the stairs. After checking the front door deadbolt, he informs his wife all is well, and he begins his journey toward the staircase. As he walks toward the first stair, he hears an eerie growl, which is soon followed up by a heavy stream of sage. Once Larry got a whiff of the ghastly smell, he begins to throw up repeatedly on the hall floor. Unbeknownst to Larry, the closet door slowly creaked open… the next thing, we see are three thin, long fingers moving in a rhythmic pattern on the white wall.  Upstairs, we hear Tabitha screaming and the sound of scissors repeatedly cutting. We see a quick flash of Tabitha dead in her bed.

Hotch breaks the tension in the room by telling Larry, he was the one who killed his wife. Larry quickly interjects by informing Hotch, he wasn’t the one. He insists the shadow monster did this horrific crime. Hotch, to prove his point, instructs Larry to unbutton his shirt, and there before our eyes are several scratch marks. And, why does he already know this scenario to be true? The answer, there are two other victims (Daniel Karras and Christine McNeil), who have no recollection of killing a loved one – the only similarity they all share the same MO.

Upon completion of his interview with Larry, Hotch walks straight to the conference room where his team is already assembled and in the middle of theorizing what has happened to Larry, Daniel and Christine. They unanimously agree it must be some form of drug, since it seems like mind control over three different types of people in three different states.

Later that day, Morgan and JJ are in the interrogation room with Daniel Karras. Morgan asks Daniel to close his eyes and bring him back to the time where he believes this incident took place. He remembers coming home and heading straight to the refrigerator. He grabs for a beer and opens it. He takes a swig, and immediately notices the taste was unfamiliar. Daniel then calls for his mother, and realizes she isn’t home. Within minutes, he smelt a ghastly sage smell and then passes out. When he comes too, he was in a dark room, tied with rope to a large, wooden table. Daniel remembers being molested by a shadow monster. Once he utters those words aloud, his wide eyes quickly turn to tears. He insists he was molested, and please do a rape kit. Morgan tells Daniel, the doctors did in fact do a rape kit, and he was not raped. Daniel is completely in shock. To ease his pain, Morgan tells him there is another victim by the name of Christine McNeil is suffering from a similar trauma as him.

In a different interrogation room, Hotch and Callahan are trying to speak with Christine McNeil. She is catatonic, while tapping the temples of her head, when Garcia rushes into the room to urgently speak with Hotch. Garcia and Hotch leave the room, while Callahan stays behind to try and converse with Christine. Outside the door, Garcia tells Hotch that in 1985, the three victims were adopted and she’s trying to find the foster home where the three believed to have lived.

Meanwhile, Hotch walks into the interrogation room where Larry is sitting alone, he hands Larry a drawing pad and pencil and tells him, “Draw me what you saw.” The same scenario is done with Daniel. Next we see, Daniel’s drawing of the shadow monster.
