Trevor Noah Apologizes For Racist Tweets – Calling Them a Joke

By on April 1, 2015

Trevor Noah, the replacement host for Jon Stewart on The Daily Show, is already causing a stir and a name for himself. Unfortunately, the name is not a positive one, with viewers of The Daily Show, turning their back on him before he has even started his new gig.

Following some tweets that emerged dating back to 2009, where Noah had some nasty things to say about Jewish people and women, there was a backlash from the masses. It left The Daily Show viewers wondering if Trevor Noah would still be Stewarts replacement and Comedy Central has released a statement standing behind their choice.

The statement said:

“Like many comedians, Trevor Noah pushes boundaries; he is provocative and spares no one, himself included. To judge him or his comedy based on a handful of jokes is unfair. Trevor is a talented comedian with a bright future at Comedy Central.”

Noah also took to Twitter to defend himself saying,

“To reduce my views to a handful of jokes that didn’t land is not a true reflection of my character, nor my evolution as a comedian.”

A couple of the offensive tweets that have been criticized include:

“Behind every successful Rap Billionaire is a double as rich Jewish man. #BeatsByDreidel.”

“Almost bumped a Jewish kid crossing the road. He didn’t look b4 crossing but I still would [have] felt so bad in my german car!”

While comediennes do push the envelope, they don’t always offend specific religions and genders while doing it. It is possible to be funny without being insulting – isn’t it?

Will Trevor Noah receive the viewers that Jon Stewart (who also happens to be Jewish) did on The Daily Show? It will be interesting to see what Stewart has to say about Noah’s tweets. Stewart is not one to back down, will he take him on. Will he also claim Trevor was ‘just joking’ and has evolved?
