Ben Stiller has had suffered a sad loss this weekend as his mother, actress Anne Meara passed away. She was 85. Originally a member of the duo “Stiller and Meara” with husband/actor Jerry Stiller, she is known for several acting parts but for me, I remember her most from “Sex and the City.” On the hit HBO show, now in reruns, she played Miranda’s (Cynthia Nixon) mother-in-law who was drunk most of her episodes then suffered from Alzheimer’s. She was credited with teaching the somewhat cold character of Miranda with learning how to love.

Meara also appeared on the daytime soap opera “All My Children” and the extra-terrestrial television show “ALF.” Her hubby of sixty-one years is Jerry Stiller of “King of Queens” and “Seinfeld” fame. Son Ben Stiller hardly needs an introduction as he has appeared in too many movies to count such as “Zoolander,” “Meet the Parents” and “Night At the Museum.” Two of those movies actually featured mom Anne by his side.

The Stiller family released a statement upon Meara’s passing om Saturday: “The Stiller family is deeply saddened to share the beloved Anne Meara passed away last night at the age of 85. She is survived by her husband and partner in life, Jerry Stiller. The two were married for 61 years and worked together almost as long. Anne’s memory lives on in the hearts of daughter Amy, son Ben, her grandchildren, her extended family and friends, and the millions she entertained as an actress, writer and comedienne.”

Not only has she been nominated for Primetime Emmy Awards (five to be exact) but also a Tony Award and won a Writers Guild Award so no doubt where Ben got his multi-talented personality from. The family was extremely close and extremely talented with Jerry and Anne being featured on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Her extended family includes Ben Stiller’s wife Christine Taylor, who played Marcia Brady in the Brady Bunch comedic remake films and had guest appearances on such shows as “FRIENDS.” No word on where a service will be held but we send our deepest sympathies and condolences to the Stiller/Meara family during this difficult time.
