Charleston Shooter Found in North Carolina- Dylann Roof in Custody
The world has been up in arms since last night’s Charleston Church shooting that left nine people dead. Six women and three men, including the Pastor and State Senator Clementa Pinckney were killed by Dylann Roof, 21. Roof allegedly sat in on late-night Bible study for around an hour before he took out his gun out and started to fire, leaving one witness alive. The incident, in which police are calling a “hate crime,” happened in Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. This is a predominately African-American Church.
U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch was the one to come out and confirm the capture as we wait for President Barack Obama to give a press conference in regards to the incident. No word on when he will speak but it is believed that it could be any time during the afternoon. I would assume that he is getting all of the appropriate information before he speaks out. Lynch had this to say: “I can confirm there is a suspect in custody.” There was no more she could say. At about 12:19p.m. EST, President Obama came out to address America and said that “saying the thoughts and prayers are with the family and the community is not enough…any death of this sort is a tragedy.”
He also refers to Church as a place to seek “solace,” “peace” and “worship.” He talks about the history of this Church and how it never gave up despite the racial issues of the times. “This is a sacred place in the history of Charleston.” The FBI will open a hate crime investigation and President Obama will leave it up to the police to handle this situation before he addresses any further. He went on to talk about how disheartening this is and subtly addressed gun control. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones though as it was said, that just is not enough.
