NBC is pushing Brian Williams over to MSNBC ending all of the speculation about whether or not the network planned on dumping him. While not getting dumped, this is certainly not a step up for the former anchor of NBC Nightly News. He will be permanently replaced by Lester Holt.

Williams was the trusted anchor who was also becoming a media darling as he made guest appearances on shows like 30 Rock and late night talk shows where he slow jammed the news on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. His popularity tanked after reports surfaced that he lied about some of his experiences.

Initially Williams removed himself from his chair but was later hit with  a six month suspension by NBC. He admitted to lying when he claimed to have been riding in helicopter that was hit by enemy fire while reporting during the Iraq war. There were rumors of other embellishments, rumors NBC took seriously.

There has been much speculation while he has been on suspension over whether the network would fire him or even whether he could ride his wave of popularity back into the anchor chair. Some tabloids even questioned him walking his talk as an attempt to gain positive PR.

Williams issued a statement expressing remorse, “I’m sorry. I said things that weren’t true. I let my NBC colleagues down and our viewers, and I’m determined to earn back their trust.” Saying he will miss being part of the team he threw his support behind Holt adding, “I know the broadcast will be in excellent hands with Lester Holt as anchor. I will support him 100 percent as he has always supported me.”

NBC chairman Andrew Lack viewed it as an opportunity for Williams saying, “Brian now has the chance to earn back everyone’s trust. His excellent work over twenty-two years at NBC news has earned him that opportunity.”

There had been recently rumblings that Williams’ lawyer was not making negotiations easy leaving room for speculation that firing him was too costly and that Lack’s declaration of support was just to save face. For now NBC Nightly news will have a new permanent anchor and Brian Williams will be doing the lighter version of news on MSNBC.
