Caitlyn Jenner Supported at ESPY Awards by Jenner and Kardashian Kids
Caitlyn Jenner accepted the Arthur Ashe Courage Award last night at the ESYP Awards and became emotional when thanking her family. Things have not always gone smoothly between the Jenner and Kardashian clan, specifically Brody, though all differences were put aside as they put on a show of support.
Since coming out, Caitlyn has been supported by her kids with many of them expressing pride in her decision to finally live authentically. Kim Kardashian was first to be let in on the transition and admitted to being confused at first but then embraced Caitlyn after her husband Kanye stressed the importance of being able to live life truthfully.
In an emotional scene on Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Kendall and Kylie struggled with the thought that “Bruce” would disappear before being reassured that they would never lose their dad. Caitlyn’s other kids have all been on board as well with Brody talking about the lack of relationship he had with Bruce and saying he is enjoying the relationship he has with Caitlyn, something echoed by Caitlyn’s daughter Cassandra.
Still, the Kardashian kids and Jenner kids have had some friction. Brody been open with his feelings towards Kris Jenner and what he believes was her part in keeping him from his father. While he recently stated that he likes Kris, he also said that they do not talk.
Apparently that goes for his former step-sisters. He recently told the media that he is not close with Kim, Courtney, or Khloe and since their parents divorced they are “not even technically my family anymore.” He explained that they had lived extremely separate lives until recently saying that “the Kardashians were the Kardashians, and the Jenners were the Jenners.” He also mentioned that he has only met Kim’s husband Kanye once and was not aware that Kim is expecting a boy, something the whole world seems to know.
While Brody may still not be fans of the Kardashians, Caitlyn remains close with her former step-children who also happen to be Kendall and Kylie’s half siblings. Caitlyn seems to be managing the relationships better know that she’s transitioning first getting them all together to celebrate Father’s Day and now at the ESPY Awards.
The blended family, or former family, according to Brody, watched from the audience as Caitlyn, stunning in a white Versace gown first joked about the hard work that goes into getting the hair, makeup, and dress right. She had made a joke about needing a sports bra in a clip of I Am Cait before she came out.
After the jokes, Caitlyn got down to business. Describing the transition as being harder than anything she could imagine, she added, “trans people…deserve your respect.” She spoke about being a former Olympic superstar while declaring that with the “power of the spotlight” comes responsibility.
Caitlyn spoke about the struggles many in the trans community face including homelessness and attempted suicide. She spoke of a transgender teen committing suicide shortly before her interview with Diane Sawyer aired and hopes to help educate people on trans issues while mainly calling for respect and kindness.
At the end of her speech she thanked her family who all appeared to be moved by her emotional speech. Kendall was seen wiping tears from her eyes while Khloe and Kim beamed up at Caitlyn as she spoke.
The Kardashian and Jenner kids were able to put aside whatever differences they may have to support Caitlyn. They posed for some lighthearted pictures backstage that they shared on Instagram. Brody shared a picture that left the Kardashians out but included Odell Beckham Jr. which may be his way of continuing to place distance between himself and his more famous former step-sisters.
After thanking her mother, sister, and kids, Caitlyn Jenner looked overcome with emotion as she looked out at an adoring audience. Despite the controversy over her award she received a standing ovation.
