Maria From “Sesame Street” is Retiring After 44 Years With the Show

By on July 2, 2015

A part of my childhood is going away as the announcement has been made that “Sesame Street” will lose long-time resident Maria. Why? Wasn’t the Elmo scandal enough for those of the SS generation to handle? The actress who portrays Maria, Sonia Manzano, will finish up this season and then, according to the American Libraries Association, will depart the series. The news was revealed in a tweet which is definitely something they did not have back in 1971 when Sonia started on the show as a teenager. She was one-half of the iconic couple Luis and Maria who owned the Fix-It Shop.

Manzano not only portrayed Maria but she was also working behind the scenes as a show writer, which garnered her fifteen Emmy Awards. Once the news went viral, “Maria” had to take to Twitter to console heartbroken fans (like me) and let them know that she would not be gone forever. “Maybe I’ll go back for 50th anniversary and make a guest appearance!” Can we wait that much longer? No. But she does need to flourish as “Sesame Street” has not been Sonia’s only gig. The actress has been on “Law and Order: SVU” as a judge and has tried her hand off-Broadway in “Godspell.”

She also has a few books coming out this summer; one children’s book titled “The Lowdown on the High Bridge” and an autobiography entitled “Becoming Maria: Love and Chaos in the South of Bronx.” Okay, so there will be something for fans of all ages to keep us occupied over the Summer as we sadly have to let her flourish. I did always wonder how the humans felt about living on a street filled with Muppets. I am hopeful that this will be revealed in her book as well as her opinion of the Elmo scandal and everything “Sesame Street.” I guess we will have to wait until 2021 to see if Sonia Manzano returns but we wish her all the best and cannot wait to see what she does next.
