Today’s Wimbledon match between Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova will be one of the fiercest matches of the series, not only because it is the semi-finals in the series, but because Williams and Sharapova have something else in common, Sharapova’s boyfriend, who happens to be William’s ex-boyfriend.

If that doesn’t make for an uncomfortable situation, nothing will. Add in the fact that Sharapova is a tall, leggy, gorgeous blonde, loved by the media, with millions of dollars in sponsorship money and a rival is created.

During the athletes 11-year rivalry, Serena Williams has beaten Maria Sharapova 17 out of the 19 times they have met on the court. Sharapova has beaten Williams back in 2004 at Wimbledon and one other time.

Outside of the tennis court, the rivalry has gotten nasty beginning with Sharapova’s current boyfriend, Bulgarian tennis heart-throb Dimitrov. Dimitrov had a brief relationship with Williams in 2012, before dumping her for the younger tennis player, Sharapova. Williams was broken hearted swearing off of romance and saying during an interview her last relationship (with Dimitrov) “was too much of a heartbreak.”

Sharapova then outed Williams relationship with her then married coach, 45 year old, Mouratoglo. Sharapova spoke in an interview stating, ‘If she wants to talk about something personal, maybe she should talk about her relationship and her boyfriend that was married and is getting a divorce and has kids.’

Williams was also caught speaking about Sharapova during an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine in 2013, where during a personal conversation with her sister Venus was overheard and she reportedly mocked Sharapova saying,‘She’s still not going to be invited to the cool parties.
and hey, if she wants to be with the guy with a black heart, go for it.’ Just think, a woman in her 30’s still concerned about being invited to the ‘cool’ parties.

Needless to say, this off the court rivalry will definitely be brought to the court once again. Will Sharapova be able to pull out a win or will the win go to Serena Williams? We will be watching.
