On the last episode, the Mercury and Gemini wives banded together to go to the NASA big wigs to talk them into giving them more information when asked as opposed to shaking them off. Gus Grissom and a small crew began a test flight in Apollo 1, only for the shuttle to explode, killing all of the men inside. The full recap is here.

On the new episode, Betty struggles to cope with the loss of Gus. Gus’ funeral goes on Afterward, a ‘friend’ of Gus’ approaches her and gives her a hug, then whispers there’s something they’re not telling her about Gus, and leaves her a phone number. She tells the girls later, and they’re all skeptical, assuming that the man’s crazy.  The husbands share a drink, and they talk about whether or not Gus’ death was a genuine accident or an oversight. Alan insists that if the error was an oversight, they’re all done. Deke questions it, and John sides with Alan, so the others do as well.  Later at home, Deke tries to take over working out Betty and Gus’ bills. They notice an odd charge on one of the bills, but Deke brushes it off as nothing, claiming that they’ll be set. He genuinely doesn’t seem to know about it.  Later that night, Betty meets up with the man who approached her before. He introduces himself as one of the people who worked on constructing the time capsule. He explains that he caught the errors that Gus did and wrote a memo on it, but it was ignored.

Betty goes to Deke and Alan with the information. They admit being hesitant about how to handle the revelation, given that it was by word of mouth and Betty was intent on keeping the man’s identity secret, as asked. Meanwhile, Louise  checks in on Pat, the wife of one of the other astronauts who died with Gus. That night, Alan and Louise sit down to dinner, but there’s a call and he has Louise turn on the TV- it’s a press release by the NASA publicist about the fate of the mission- they want to continue the missions on schedule, all as planned. The rest of the wives and couples watch, and all of them dread that response.
