When Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin decided to end their marriage, the term “conscious uncoupling” became their term. It was immediately associated with them and in some ways, became a joke. Why so technical? Why not just say that they were getting a divorce. Paltrow, 42 and Martin, 38 were married for twelve years and had two children, Apple, 11 and Moses, 9 before ending their relationship. Chris Martin has seemingly moved on with another Oscar winning actress, Jennifer Lawrence while Paltrow has been dating around.

Now, the daughter of Blythe Danner and the late Bruce Paltrow is opening up to Fast Company about the term that went on to define her divorce and how she had no idea that it would become such a big deal after releasing the initial statement. Turns out that Gwyneth nor Chris had no idea that “conscious uncoupling” was even being used to define them as it was Elise Loehnen, the Editorial Director of Paltrow’s company Goop who labeled the piece. “When I announced that I was separating on the website, [Goop editorial director Elise Loehnen] titled the piece ‘Conscious Uncoupling,’ and I had no idea.”

By the time it was released, it was too late to go back and everyone had jumped on the bandwagon. The divorce is “amicable” but Paltrow looks back at her younger self, twenty years ago and has this to say: “My future self is always afraid when I look back. I had this the other day where somebody was asking me about [the movie Emma], which I did in England when I was 22. It was really my first starring role, an adaptation of Jane Austin’s Emma. And I remember at the time people saying, ‘Weren’t you intimidated to play this English heroine? You’re this American girl.’ When I think about it [now], I would be petrified.”

Living without fear is seemingly the best way to get by for the actress who was engaged to Brad Pitt and dated Ben Affleck. Do you believe that she did not have anything to do with the term or do you think she is just embarrassed by the mocking it received? Let us know.
