Man Who Aided Rosie O’Donnell’s Daughter in Disappearance Arrested
Rosie O’Donnell’s daughter is home safely after running away, and now the man who aided her during her disappearance is under arrest. Steven Sheerer, 25, is facing charges of child endangerment and distribution of obscenity to a minor. He was arrested at his home in Barnegat, New Jersey on Friday night.
Chelsea left home with her therapy dog Bear on August 11. Her mother was reportedly in contact with her through third parties. Rosie reported her daughter missing on August 16 sending out pleas for help on social media and on her website Rosie.com. Rosie was concerned that her daughter suffers from an undisclosed mental illness and had stopped taking her medication. Within hours Chelsea was found by police in New Jersey and she went home with them willingly though there are reports that she told police she would prefer to stay with Sheerer.
Police arrived at Sheerer’s home looking for Chelsea. At first he told them she was not there but she was discovered hiding in his attic. Rosie called the police personally to thank them for their help. The police gave credit to her reach on social media in getting the word out and finding Chelsea as quickly as they did.
Soon after Rosie posted a string of Tweets about Scheerer’s previous arrests. According to an article in the Manahawkin Patch Sheerer had been previously charged with third-degree possession of heroin with the intent to distribute, third-degree possession of heroin, third-degree endangering the welfare of a child and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Chelsea met Sheerer through the dating app Tinder and had communicated with him for at least a week before running away. Rosie gave police permission to go through Chelsea’s phone where they made a discovery that led to the charges. If convicted, Sheerer faces over five years in jail.
Rosie thanked her supporters and took some questions on the Ask Ro section of her website before announcing she was taking some time off. She however did send out a Tweet of Chelsea’s artwork in which the teen had written, “to use an anchor you need a rope chelsea od.”
Chelsea was adopted by Rosie and her first wife Kellie Carpenter. Chelsea recently discovered her birth mother leading to some friction. Her birth mother gave an interview to a tabloid accusing Rosie of stealing her daughter. Rosie called it a ploy for money and expressed disappointment that a private matter would go public.
Rosie has been open about her own issues with depression and responded to a Tweet asking how this could happen to such a perfect mother by stating that no mother is perfect. She has been under fire by her second wife, Michelle Rounds in a custody battle over their adopted daughter Dakota with Rounds claiming that Rosie is not a present parent between drinking, smoking pot, and being too busy to be there for her kids. There is no word of Rounds plans on using this incident as ammunition in their battle.
