“The Wiz Live!” Has Found Their Tin-Man and Scarecrow- Who’s Joining the Cast?
Last week, it was announced that the casting department had found their Dorothy for NBC’s “The Wiz Live!” when they cast eighteen-year-old Shanice Williams. The newcomer was joining the already signed Queen Latifah as The Wiz and Mary J. Blige as The Wicked Witch as well as David Alan Grier in the role of The Cowardly Lion. Now, we have more casting news to share and are super excited about this. Playing Glinda will be Uzo Aduba of “Orange Is the New Black” fame and Amber Riley in the role of Addaperle, the sister of Glinda and the Wicked Witch. On top of that, there are even more additions to share courtesy of Bob Greenblatt of NBC, who also revealed that Rihanna was joining season nine of “The Voice.”
We can confirm that Ne-Yo, Common and Elijah Kelley will help to round out the cast of the show, set to air December 3rd. So, who will they be playing? “Ne-Yo is going to be playing the Tin Man, Elijah Kelley will be playing the Scarecrow, and Common will be playing the non-singing comedic role of the gatekeeper to Oz.” You may remember Kelley from another musical remake, “Hairspray” which coincidentally co-starred Queen Latifah. It was rumored by E! sources that Beyonce was in talks to join the cast but it seems as though the production is complete for now. This will be a remake of the film “The Wiz,” which starred Diana Ross as Dorothy and the late Michael Jackson.
As to whether or not this star-studded cast will do it justice, that is yet to be seen. “The Wiz Live!” follows in the footsteps of “The Sound of Music Live!” which starred Carrie Underwood and “Peter Pan Live!” They both received mixed reviews from critics and fans so the hope is that “The Wiz” will be the feel-good musical of the holiday season. Following that musical is a live rendition of “Grease,” starring Julianne Hough of “Dancing With the Stars” fame. So, what do you think of this cast? Let us know!
