Kris Jenner Meets Caitlyn For the Cameras-Is it a Showdown or a Throwdown?
Kris and Caitlyn Jenner made their first public appearance together at daughter Kylie’s 18th birthday party. They were all smiles for the camera even posting selfies of them looking like a happy family on Instagram. That, however, was not the first time the two have come face to face since Caitlyn’s transition. That meeting will be seen for the first time this Sunday on E!’s I Am Cait.
In the heavily teased episode, Caitlyn waits for Kris to arrive but not before we see that the meeting is going to be fraught with tension. The former spouses sparred back and forth in Caitlyn’s Vanity Fair interview in which Kris blamed Caitlyn’s changing personality before she was transitioning. Caitlyn blamed the way Kris treated her when she was still Bruce making the outrageous claim that the decision to divorce was only 20% about her transition.
Kim Kardashian and her sister Khloe took issue with some of Caitlyn’s statements admonishing her to stop bashing their mother. While the family have all been supportive publicly, Caitlyn has repeatedly stated on her show that the private support has fallen short with the exception of Kim.
Now she has decided to reach out to Kris and extend an olive branch. In the preview she says, “I don’t know if we’ll resolve anything but I should probably get some things off my chest.”
Caitlyn says that Kris has not called her in a year and has not met Caitlyn. Her hope is to make peace, especially for the kids saying, “for the kids, Kendall and Kylie, I don’t want tension. I don’t want them in a tough position,” before acknowledging, “This is really very, very difficult.”
When Kris finally arrives she is bearing a box of cookies while Caitlyn has made up a cheese platter. The two sit across from one another on opposite couches looking very uncomfortable, something that has been played up in the media in the days before the episode premieres.
Give Kris and Caitlyn credit for their effort. How many divorced couples are willing to sit down and attempt some type of peace for the sake of their kids? Yes, it is for television and they are notorious publicity hounds but they could have rode the Kris/Caitlyn feud for ratings and publicity. Instead they allowed cameras in, as always, to show an other facet of transitioning and the way it can affect relationships.
In fairness to Kris, it can’t be easy when your husband of 23 years announces a desire to live an authentic life and transition. It is a transition for her and the rest of the family. Caitlyn is also in a tough spot. She has tried to ease her family into it and show them as much respect as possible but in the end she deserves to live a happy life.
While the sit-down is for the cameras, it is impossible to miss the emotions and even the awkward tension as a once happy couple tries to sort this out. It won’t be easy but at least they’re trying.
