Agents of SHIELD Recap 11/10/15 Season 3 Ep. 7 “Chaos Theory”
Consistent with the main theme of Agents of Shield, happiness is not meant to last. Skye and Ward. Jemma and Fitz. Coulson and Whatsername from season one. Andrew and May seemed to be doomed from the start, though no one knew it at the time. When Andrew was first introduced, he was a husband long of the past that May had forgotten.
In the beginning of “Chaos Theory,” it seems that May and Andrew had a second chance – though no one was able to watch it. On a beautiful beach in Hawaii, May and Andrew were rebuilding their destroyed marriage. But this is Agents of SHIELD and it was not to last. While Andrew was investigating some artifacts from Afterlife, the refuge of the Inhumans, he was hit with terrigen mist and turned to stone for the beginning of his metamorphosis. And that, as they say, is history.
Back in real time, Skye/Daisy and Coulson are debating the ethics of keeping Inhumans in a controlled stasis. Skye/Daisy talks about her status as an Inhuman with such confidence as though she is the figurehead for the entire movement. The show seems to want us to forget that it was only last season that she had just discovered her origins and suddenly she is no longer insecure over something she used to be so afraid of. Another convenient tying up of loose ends, SHIELD.
Andrew’s thoughts and feelings on the Inuhmans is put in a very different context and perspective now that it has been revealed he is the so called monster killing other Inhumans. He sides with Coulson, agreeing that Inhumans should be contained. He seems to know what he has become, but he isn’t apologizing for it. In his own way, he is taking responsibility in his own way.
May is still reeling from the news that Andrew is Lash. From her conversation from Bobbi, it’s clear that she’s still protecting her ex-husband. She hasn’t told anyone what Strucker told her about Andrew’s identity. Even so, she tracks him down and confronts him. Their conversation gets heated and he loses control. His code is destroying Inhumans who are ‘bad.’ May is not included on this list. In fact, he wast trying to protect her the entire time. That was the only reason that he broke things off with her. A nice sentiment, but of course, the gesture is lost.
Lincoln arrives at SHIELD, telling them everything he knows. Finally everyone is aware of what Andrew has become. They immediately track down May. Lincoln is the authority on Inhuman rules and Inhumans cannot shift between one state and another. Andrew is apparently still in transition. Soon, Andrew will turn into Lash permanently.
The ATCU is trying to find a cure for being Inhuman, something that Skye/Daisy is adamant against. But if that is something that could save Andrew from losing himself, it seems that it is something SHIELD will have to consider. The ATCU has followed SHIELD and is referring to them, something Rosalind never would have considered before getting to know Coulson. This would be considered a quick turn around if it weren’t for the coda. Just as everyone is beginning to trust her, her Hydra connection becomes clear.
