Known to millions as the quintessential girl next door, Sandra Bullock has been entertaining audiences since the 90’s.  In 2007 Bullock earned her rank as the 14th richest female celebrity and has appeared in numerous financially successful movies.

Born Sandra Annette Bullock to Helga D. Meyer, a German opera singer and John W. Bullock, a voice coach and Executive.  Sandra spent her early years traveling with her mother on her opera tours and living in Germany and other parts of Europe.   In 2005, she married Jesse James, motorcycle builder and host of Monster Garage.

Three credits short of graduating college, she picked up and moved to New York City to pursue her dream of acting.   She supported herself doing odd jobs such as bartender, cocktail waitress, and coat checker.  Her first notable appearance was in the sci-fi/action movie Demolition Man in 1993 with Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes.  That role led to her breakthrough performance in Speed, one of the most successful action films ever made.   Appearing in the film propelled her into stardom and opened doors for the young actress.  From there she starred in the hit film, ‘While You Were Sleeping’ and a slew of other well known films.   It wasn’t until 2009 that Sandra would have a year like no other that would give the actress two record highs in her career.  In the beginning of the year, she released ‘The Proposal’, which was a huge hit at the box-office, raking in over $314 million worldwide, and then in November ‘The Blind Side’, a role she originally turned down three times due to her discomfort portraying a devout Christian. Luckily she changed her mind because her portrayal of Leigh Anne Tuohy earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress.   Not only did she grab her first Oscar win, she became the first star to win best and worst actress in the same year as she picked up a Razzie Award the night before the Academy Awards.

While she has been praised for her onscreen persona, critics haven’t been as kind to her films. In 2009, Mark Kermode, an English film critic had this to say about the beloved actress, “She’s funny, she’s gorgeous, it’s impossible not to love her, and yet she makes rotten film after rotten film after rotten film”. Kermode claimed she had only made three good movies in her career, Speed, While You Were Sleeping, and Crash.  One might wonder if he’s since changed his tune now that she’s won the Academy Award.

In addition to acting in numerous films, and owning various businesses, she is also a philanthropist, generously donating money to those in need of help.  A supporter of the American Red Cross, she donated $1 million dollars after 9/11, another to Tsunami relief fund in 2004, and recently another million to the relief efforts in Haiti.
