Curb Your Enthusiasm ‘The Bare Middriff’ Recap 10/25

The focus is on flab this week on Curb Your Enthusiasm. In an episode that’s bizarre and literally gut wrenching, Larry’s time spent working on the Seinfeld reunion with Jerry is daunted by their chubby assistant Maureen’s love of midriff shirts. They can’t fire her because she is Julia Louis Dreyfus’ niece, so they decide with a match of “odds and evens” that Larry should be the one to talk to Maureen about the office dress code. He manages to offend her enough to make her quit (perhaps it was the suggestion that she wear something in between a midriff top and a burka).
Larry later goes to her house to coax her into returning, but not without meeting her mother, who swears he’s the spitting image of her deceased husband who was murdered for honking, and leaving some drops from his powerful urine stream on the picture of Jesus hanging in the bathroom. The “backsplash” turns out to be a blessing in disguise when Maureen and her mother see it and mistake it for a tear, prompting them to plan a tour of the country to exhibit this miracle.
Larry’s luck begins to deteriorate when Cheryl runs into Larry and Jerry and thanks Jerry for the part in the reunion he never agreed to give her; fortunately, Meg Ryan is out of the picture due to scheduling issues. Larry smoothes things over by telling Cheryl that she just needs to do a reading as a technicality, although Cheryl still seems a bit skeptical.
Things get worse when a “napkin nazi” in a pizzeria has him arrested for stealing napkins. Ironically, his questioning earlier in the episode of whether all bald people look alike comes into play when the Napkin Nazi fails to distinguish between him and a bald black man in a lineup.
Larry is driving Maureen’s mom home when he makes the mistake of honking at Richard Lewis and pulling over. When both get out of the car, Lewis confronts Larry for not sharing his booth at a restaurant with him the previous day and for not calling him back after Larry’s phone dropped his call. The hostile scene sparks a flashback for Maureen’s mom, causing her to hit Lewis with Larry’s car.
The episode reaches its climax when Larry stops Maureen’s mom from jumping off a roof after discovering what the Jesus’ “tear” really was and keeps from falling to his own death by grabbing onto Maureen’s stomach. Despite Larry’s belief that “every erection is a miracle”, the real miracle in this episode is that everyone, including Lewis, makes it through unscathed.
