From ABC.com

From ABC.com

“Dancing With The Stars” kicked off tonight on ABC at 8pm EST with its two-hour premiere.   The dancing fun continues tomorrow night, continuing its three day long premiere event.

DWTS has made a couple of changes this season by starting out with 16 couples – more than any other season and by adding a relay dance off where each of the dancers for the evening take part in a dance off.  Four dancers at a time take 30 seconds and dance the same type of dance routine and are ranked1st place to 4th place with the 1st place ranking getting 10 points, the 2nd place ranking gets 8 points, the 3rd place ranking gets 6 points and the 4th place ranking gets 4 points.  These points are then added to their individual scores for the evening.

The 16 couples for Season 9 couples were introduced.  Aaron Carter and professional dance partner, Karina, Chuck Lidell, UFC Fighter and professional partner, Anna, Mark Dacascos, actor and martial arts and professional partner, Lacey,  Ashley Hamilton, actor and Edyta, Donny Osmond, show biz legend, and professional dancer, Kim, Louie Vito, snowboarder and Chelsie,  Michael Irvin, NFL star and Anna, Tom DeLay, former House Majority Leader and partner, Cheryl, Debi Mazar, actress and professional dancer, Maks, Melissa Joan Hart, actress and Mark, Mya, singer and Dmitry, Kathy Ireland, former model and professional dancer Tony, Natalie Coughlin, Olympic Swimmer and professional dancer, Alec, Macy Gray, singer and professional dancer,Jonathan, Joanna Krupa, model and professional dancer, Derek, Kelly Osbourne, Reality TV star and professional dancer, Louie.

Dancing tonight were the men.  The show started with Aaron Carter and Karina dancing the cha cha.   Len Goodman said the dance was full of potential and a great start to the show, Bruno agreed there was a lot of potential, and Carrie Ann said, “Little Aaron Carter is all grown up”.  Aaron and Karina scored a total of 22.

Next up was Chuck Lidell and Anna dancing the fox trot.   Bruno said the dance was very rough and the couple had a bit of work to do, Carrie Ann said they were smooth and charming, Len said it was much better than he thought it was going to be and he recommended that Chuck get in touch with his feminine side.  Chuck and Anna scored a total of  16.

The third couple to dance was Mark Dacascos and Lacey dancing the cha cha.  Carrie Ann said Mark has a lot of potential, Len said he didn’t want to see kung fu in every dance and Bruno said to watch their timing.  Mark and Lacey scored a  total of 21.

Ashley Hamilton, George Hamilton’s son, was up next with partner, Edyta who also happened to be George Hamilton’s former dance partner on a previous season of DWTS.  The couple danced the fox trot.  Len said Ashley’s footwork was correct but needed more finesse, Bruno said there was a total lack of showmanship and Carrie Ann said the couple needed to define themselves.  Ashley and Edyta scored a total of 15.

Next up was Donny Osmond and partner, Kym who danced the fox trot.  Donny gets extremely embarrassed when he has to hold Kym intimately.  Bruno started by saying that Donny knows how to play an audience but Donny is not confident, Carrie Ann said Donny was going to be a fan favorite and Len said it was too theatrical.  Donny and Kym scored a total of 20.

Louie Vito and partner, Chelsie danced the fox trot.  Carrie Ann said an honest effort was put forward, Len made a comment about Louie’s hair being a bit too long but he did have good technique and Bruno felt the dance lacked fluidity but Louie is going to be a good dancer eventually.  Louie and Chelsie scored a 19.

Michael Irvin and partner Anna danced the cha cha cha.  Len said it wasn’t a great first dance, Bruno said Michael had a great presence but he wasn’t a great dancer and Carrie Ann said Michael had charisma but there was a lack of content in the dance.  Michael’s goal is to beat Jerry Rice, a pro football player who was a former competitor on DWTS.  Unfortunately Michael scored a 13 on the cha cha cha to Jerry’s 21 on his cha cha cha.

The final couple of the evening were Tom DeLay and Cheryl who danced the cha cha cha.  Bruno began by saying Tom was crazier than Sarah Palin, Carrie Ann said the dance was surreal and Tom was naturally graceful and Len summed it up by saying, “Part was magic and part was tragic”.  Tom and Cheryl had a total score of 16.

For the first time, DWTS ended the evening with what they called a relay performance where the performers danced one after another.   Ashley, Chuck, Donny and Louie all performed the salsa with their dance partners.  Donnie Osmond received all of the kudos from the judges.  The judges ranked the dancers from first to last.  Ranked 1st was Donny and Kym with 10 points, ranked 2nd was Louie and Chelsie with 8 points , ranked 3rd was Chuck and Anna with 6 points, ranked 4th was Ashley and Edyta with 4 points.  These scores are added to the couples individual scores from earlier in the night.

Dancing the Viennese Waltz for their relay dance was Aaron, Mark, Tom and Michael.  The judges were impressed with all of the dancers with the exception of Tom, who seemed a bit skippy.  The 1st ranked was Aaron and Karina with 10 points, the 2nd ranked was Mark and Lacey with 8 points, the 3rd ranked was Michael and Anna with 6 points and the 4th ranked was Tom and Cheryl with 4 points.

All of the dances were out scored out of a total of 30.  Below you will find a summary of the scores:

Aaron and Karina scored a total of 22 + 10 points for the relay = 32 total points

Chuck and Anna scored a total of 16 + 6 points for the relay = 22 total points

Mark and Lacey scored a total of 21 + 8 points for the relay = 29 total points

Ashley and Edyta scored a total of 15 + 4 points for the relay = 19 points

Donny and Kym scored a total of 20 + 10 points for the relay = 30 points

Louie and Chelsie scored a total of 19 + 8  points for the relay = 27 points

Michael and Anna scored a total of 13 + 6 points for the relay = 19 points

Tom and Cheryl scored a total of 16 + 4 points for the relay = 20 points

It looks like Aaron and Karina scored the highest points for the evening with a total of 32 points and the lowest score was 19 total points for Ashley Hamilton and Michael Irvin.

What did you think about the dancers??  Do you think there are any front runners??
