Grey’s Anatomy, ReCap 10/22/09, ‘I Saw What I Saw’

This week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy is entitled, “I Saw What I Saw” and is about a burn victim who unexpectedly dies in the E.R.. All the Mercy West and Seattle Grace residents must defend their actions with the hope of saving their jobs.
There was a massive hotel fire with a number of casualities. One of the burn victims dies unexpectedly and the Chief and the hospital board are looking to find out who was at fault. Dr. Yang was the first person to receive the patient’s (Mrs. Becker) chart but immediately handed it off to another doctor who did the initial exam. Dr. Sloane then took over. After looking at the patient’s leg and determining that the patient had 2nd degree burns on her leg he handed the patient off to Lexi.
No one was “officially” in charge of Mrs. Becker causing a lot of confusion. When Mrs. Becker complains of pain on her chest – Dr. Yang orders the morphine but did not follow up with the patient. Mrs. Becker’s son went over to Lexi to tell her that she couldn’t breath. Lexi was trying to put a chest tube into the patient when another doctor came over and shoved the chest tube in.
Charlie, a doctor from Mercy West, tries to work on Mrs. Becker without any success until Dr. Karev steps in – he mumbles something about hitting her carotid artery – but he is successful in saving her temporarily. Mrs. Becker bled out and died.
Dr. Adamson, a doctor from Mercy West told the chief that Dr. Kefner, another doctor from Mercy West, “forgot” to look at the patient’s throat. By looking at her throat she would have seen there was soot in her throat, intubated her and prevented her death. Dr. Kefner was fired.
The episode was a bit confusing but ultimately the fact that there were so many doctors who don’t know each other or trust each other is destroying the hospital. While the Chief found the person who he thought was responsible for the death of Mrs. Blecker, Derek pointed out the person ultimately responsible may not have been Dr. Kefner – maybe it is the fact that the Chief is allowing the chaos to continue.
