Project Runway ReCap 1/21/10 | Lauren Hutton Guest Judge on Project Runway

This week’s challenge revolves around the old saying, “a beautiful woman can look good in anything- even a potato sack”. While some of the designers are hoping that it will involve doing something cool around the city, they end up taking a field trip to a farm, where they find each of their models clad in just that: a burlap potato sack. Since the theme this week based on the old adage, it seems fitting that the fabric to be used is burlap, which Emilio describes as being “as old as Mozes”.

Another thing that is unique about this challenge is that each model picks the designer she wants to work with. Alexis creates a stir when she changes designers, choosing Anthony over Mila, with whom she worked last week. Time constraints are a bit more lax this week, with each contestant being granted fifteen minutes to choose his or her trims and a day to complete the entire challenge. Although some of the designers succeed in creating impressive garments in the allotted time period, others are not able to do the models justice.

Back at Parson’s, tensions begin to rise. Anthony finds Alexis to be a bit too opinionated, and Mila confronts Anthony about Alexis’ choice asserting that “it’s her loss”. Tim checks in early on in the challenge. Some designs, such as Pamela’s ombre dyed dress, seem promising, but he expresses concern over Jay’s decision to both dye his fabric and apply trim. Ping Wu wants to play with textures and says that although she does things differently than other designers, her landing a spot in the top three last week has given her confidence. Fellow designer Jeanine points out that although Ping Wu is able to incorporate a trendy Asian influence into her design, it is her lack of experience and knowledge of garment construction that will be her downfall.

Appearing this week as a guest judge is model/actress Lauren Hutton, who helps select among the top three Mila, with a futuristic looking, metallic striped dress, and Amy, whose dress has an organic feel and a short, layered skirt.

The winner of the challenge is Jay, who has manipulated the burlap for the skirt of his dress in such a way that looks almost like feathers. Despite a beautiful dye job, Pamela’s dress is ill fitting and not sophisticated, resulting in her elimination. Perhaps she should have followed Tim’s advice and created a two piece look instead of one. Ping Wu and Jesus also wind up in the bottom three, with the judges questioning Jesus’ use of color (so far the only colors he has used are brown and pea green). Nina admits that while Ping Wu has an edgy eye, she’s not entirely sure if translates into fashion. It seems that she will be the one with the most to prove next week.

What did you think of this week’s episode??  Any favoritess?
