Project Runway ReCap 1/28/10

After last week’s decision to give Ping a second shot, the judges have finally decided that they have seen enough. From the morning of this week’s challenge to when it was the time for the final designs to go down the runway, Ping Wu was a mess: forgetting to put on her shoes, losing her sketchbook, and screaming at her challenge teammate. And it’s not only Michael, Heidi, Tim, and Nina that have had enough; a few of her fellow designers are “fit” to be tied that she’s still there.
For this week’s challenge, the designers go to the Metropolitan Museum of art for inspiration from stunning couture pieces by Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Madame Gres, and Balenciaga. Their task: to create a high-end signature look that fits into a master collection in a venue such as the Met. The designers are divided into teams of two; to Jesse’s dismay, he gets stuck with Ping. Each team is given a budget of $500, the highest in Project Runway history. The 45 minutes in Mood and the two days two complete the challenge seem like sufficient time- until the morning of the second day, when Tim announces that the teams will need to create a second look.
Tim walks into a whirlwind, with Anthony “stacked, packed, and ready to attack” and Ping arguing incessantly with Jesse, to let the designers know that they will need to create a cheaper version of an opposing team’s couture design for ten percent of the original budget. Also adding fuel to the fire is the fact that only one team member is allowed to pick out the fabric for it. By the end of the day the designers are completely flustered, with Ping scrambling to find her shoes before hitting the runway.
Ping and Jesse’s looks prove to be disasterous, with the excess fabric of their couture dress practically drowning the model and their look for less dress evidencing the fact that Ping does not know how to sew. Michael Kors was horrified by Anthony and Seth’s yellow and black “cotilion party from hell” gown, but deemed Mila and Jonathan’s jacket and pant look a refreshing departure from the gowns that everyone else did. Their look for less, a babydoll dress with a feather trim around a v-neckline, sealed the deal for Mila, who won this week and has been granted immunity. In the end, it was Anthony and Ping on the runway with the lowest scores; while one might say it was Anthony’s southern sass that saved him, it seems more likely that Ping Wu’s overly edgy eye combined with her lack of construction knowledge just didn’t cut it.
