The Big Bang Theory Recap 2/8/10

As has recurred in opening scenes and several recent episodes, Howard and Leonard share stories and are quite boastful about the fact that they have girlfriends while Raj continually feels frustrated with his lack-of-lady. The fellas sit at their lunch table and discuss their plans for Valentine’s Day. Leonard excitedly tells them that he is going to see the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland, a once in a lifetime opportunity for any physicist that was presented to him because a co-worker backed out of the trip. He then shares that the trip is on Valentine’s Day and that he is allowed to bring one guest. Sheldon, jumping to conclusions and jumping from his chair, is giddy with excitement and dashes from the cafeteria.
When Leonard arrives home, he finds Sheldon packing a suitcase. Leonard quickly breaks the news to Sheldon that he will not be accompanying him to Switzerland, but that Penny is to go instead because the trip is on Valentine’s Day. Sheldon, as you may guess, does not take this very well, exclaiming that having a girlfriend is “no dream for a scientist!”
Just when Leonard asks Penny to go with him to Switzerland for skiing and love-making,
Sheldon enters the living room holding a large binder: their Roommate Agreement. This document is a subset of their official Friendship Agreement, and contains countless rules, guidelines and clauses which are initialed by both parties. One of these clauses states that if one is invited to see CERN’s Super Collider, that the invited friend must take the other with him. Leonard blows him off, still wanting to take Penny instead.
The next day, Sheldon gives Leonard the silent treatment. At lunch, Howard tells Leonard that if he were the one going on the trip and were able to invite someone, the choice would be obvious. Howard says that he would definitely take Sheldon, take him to Switzerland and leave him there!
Morning comes and Leonard is awakened by a sweet, sunny melody played on a recorder by Sheldon. He has also prepared Leonard breakfast in bed, including Frodo-shaped pancakes! Sheldon tells his roommate that these behaviors and treats are meant as an apology for his recent negative attitude. His goal is obvious, so when Leonard tells Sheldon that he is still not going to take him to the Collider, Sheldon picks up the tray of breakfast and immediately leaves the room.
Sheldon bombards Penny in the laundry room with a PowerPoint presentation designed to illustrate why he better deserves to go to Switzerland. The presentation is incredibly insulting and before Sheldon has finished, Penny turns the lights back on and explains that it is Leonard’s decision, and since he asked her, she still plans on accompanying him. As Sheldon leaves the laundry room, he turns back to her and says solemnly, “I just hope you’ll be able to appreciate the magnitude of where you are and what it represents.” Penny, feeling guilty and pressured, says that she will talk to Leonard about the situation. With epic exhilaration, Sheldon’s wiry body flies across the room and he, with no hesitation, hugs her…
When Leonard comes home, he finds Howard and Raj eating pizza in the living room while Sheldon is in the kitchen cooking a traditional Swiss dish. Still standing firm in his desire to have Penny visit Switzerland even after she talked with him, Leonard refuses, once again, to take Sheldon to the Super Collider.
That night, as Leonard and Penny lie in bed together, she sits up abruptly and sneezes before darting into the bathroom to vomit. Between heaves, she explains to Leonard that she cannot possibly go on the trip, so he returns to his apartment and goes to knock on Sheldon’s door. There is no response to his knocking. As Leonard speaks through the bedroom door and invites Sheldon to accompany him, a nauseating heave echoes in the bathroom. Sheldon briefly comes out of the bathroom, but quickly returns as his stomach weakens again.
On the couch, Penny and Sheldon sit red-nosed and covered in blankets. Sheldon is baffled that he is sick because he always takes great care not to touch others and to always sanitize… and then he recalls hugging Penny in the laundry room. He turns and exclaims “It’s YOU, I touched YOU!” Penny smirks, saying “Happy Valentine’s Day.”
Meanwhile, Leonard arrives at the hotel room in Switzerland and his guest, Raj, strolls in behind him. Since Raj has never had a Valentine’s Day celebration of any kind, he is giddy to find champagne, roses and “little chocolates,” and soon proclaims it to be the best Valentine’s Day ever!
