Royals! They’re just like us. At least ― this one time.
Kate Middleton showed up to the 2022 Earthshot Awards on Friday in a rental dress from the rental platform HURR.
Attendees of the awards gala were asked to focus on sustainability or wear something recycled or vintage for their red carpet looks, and the Princess of Wales was right on theme.
Kate’s gown was from the designer Solace London. You can rent the Sabina dress, too, as it retails from $91 to $238.
She paired the dress with a necklace from the collection of Diana, Princess of Wales, with coordinating drop earrings and a sparkling pair of silver shoes.
Award ceremony attendees on the green ― not red ― carpet included “Mr. Robot” star Rami Malek, broadcaster Clara Amfo, “Lost” actor Daniel Dae Kim and singers Chloe x Halle, all of whom spoke with HuffPost about what they were wearing ― and how it fit with the sustainability theme of the ceremony.
“We’re all reusing our outfits, which is something you don’t usually see in our line of work,” Malek said with a smile and a laugh, before making his way to the ceremony.
Kim added that he was wearing “a tuxedo that I’ve owned for a while” and that he “made the choice not to get anything new.”
Chloe x Halle also followed the theme to a tee and told HuffPost that their gowns were meant to “represent the Earth, the water and the greenery and the land.”
“It was really fun to follow that theme,” Chloe said, while Halle added that the two were wearing “old dresses.”
“It means so much to us, being here with Earthshot,” Halle added. “Me and my sister, we’ve been vegan for 11 years, so this whole message just really rings true to who we try to be as individuals.”
Amfo, who was presenting at the ceremony for the second year in a row, was decked out in gorgeous jewels from Anabela Chan, a sustainable designer who produces lab-grown gemstones.
“I’m also wearing a Vivienne Westwood dress, which I’ve had for a little while,” Amfo added. “And obviously as we know, Vivienne Westwood has very much been very vocal about planet protection for over 30 years.”
At the awards show itself, audiences also got to see the Princess of Wales, Shailene Woodley, Malek and Catherine O’Hara present awards, with performances by Annie Lennox, Billie Eilish and Finneas, Chloe x Halle, and a goosebumps-worthy show by Ellie Goulding.
The five winners of the Earthshot Awards were also announced at the ceremony, covering the five categories: Clean Our Air, Protect and Restore Nature, Revive Our Oceans, Build a Waste-Free World and Fix Our Climate.
Each of the winners ― Mukuru Clean Stoves, Kheyti, Indigenous Women of the Great Barrier Reef, Notpla and 44.01 ― will receive $1.2 million to further their work.
Prior to the awards, the Prince of Wales wrote an exclusive essay for HuffPost about why he was “thrilled to bring The Earthshot Prize to U.S.” ― and why he remains a “stubborn optimist” about the planet’s future.
“I believe in the power of human ingenuity, and I’m thrilled to bring The Earthshot Prize to the U.S.,” he wrote. “This week, in Boston, we want to demonstrate what we can all do to help put the world on a path toward a stable climate where communities, nature and oceans thrive in harmony.”
The prince added, “In this critical decade, I invite you all to be optimistic, to support the game-changers, and to believe in the power of human ingenuity.”
