Not so “okurrr.” After Cardi B’s Invasion of Privacy took home Best Rap Album at the 2019 Grammy Awards, the rapper faced some backlash from people who felt the late Mac Miller’s Swimming should have won. While Cardi later said she was “sharing” her win with Miller, she continued to receive criticism that proved to be too much to handle — so she decided to step away from the drama and deactivate her Instagram account.
The “Money” wordsmith, 26, said goodbye to Instagram on Monday, February 11, shortly after she went on a rant about the situation. “It’s not my style for people to put other people down to uplift somebody else — that’s not my style and that’s not what I’m with and I don’t support that,” she said in a since-deleted video. “However, I’ve been taking a lot of s—t today. I’m seeing a lot of bulls—t today and I saw a lot of s—t last night and I’m sick of this s—t. I worked hard for my motherf—king album.”
Cardi also defended herself, reminding critics that she was pregnant when she created the Grammy-winning CD. She asserted: “My album went two times platinum, my n—ga. In every chart that there was, my album was always top 10. [It was a] No. 1 album as well. I f—king worked my ass off, locked myself in the studio for three months, my n—ga. Then went to sleep in my own bed sometimes for four days straight, pregnant.”
Shortly before she deactivated her Instagram, the rapper posted a cryptic note to her main feed. “I used to want this s—t foreva,” she wrote. “Ya can have it back!”
The Love & Hip Hop: New York alum became the first-ever solo female rapper to win Best Rap Album at the Grammys. The Brooklyn native was emotional as she accepted the award during the Sunday, February 10, show.
“When I found out I was pregnant, my album was not complete,” she told the audience, giving her 7-month-old daughter, Kulture, a shout-out. “We was like, ‘We have to get this album done,’ so I could still do [music] videos while I’m still not showing. And it was very long nights.”
Cardi also thanked her husband, Offset, who held her hand on stage as she spoke. She gushed: “Husband, thank you. Nah, seriously he was like, ‘You want to do this album, girl. You going to have this baby and we going to make this album.’ Thank you so much, everybody.”
