Top Gun: Maverick has become the best-selling digital title in the United States in its very first week of availability on online services.

According to Variety, Paramount Home Entertainment revealed that the Tom Cruise-starring feature has also entered the top 20 list of most-popular first week digital releases following its streaming debut on August 23. 

The media outlet also reported that the flick has made it to the top spot on services such as Amazon and Vudu.

Paramount, however, did not provide a specific amount to show how much Top Gun: Maverick earned digitally.

The digital release of the movie also includes over 100 minutes of extra content, including several behind-the-scenes features.

Other material included a featurette with Cruise that was filmed at the most recent Cannes Film Festival, as well as music videos from Lady Gaga and OneRepublic.

Top Gun: Maverick was centered on Captain Pete Mitchell, who was tasked with training a new team of pilots for a dangerous mission while confronting the demons of his past.

In addition to Cruise, who reprised his role as Mitchell and served as one of the movie’s producers, cast members included Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly and Jon Hamm, among numerous others.

Val Kilmer was also brought back to fill his old role as Tom ‘Iceman’ Kazansky.

Development on the now-released project took place over much of the mid-2010s.

Physical production on the feature commenced in 2018 and continued until the following year.

Top Gun: Maverick was initially set to be released in 2019, although its release date was pushed back several times.

The long-awaited movie eventually premiered at CinemaCon this past April, and it had a wide release in the United States on May 27.

The feature was met with widespread critical acclaim, with many critics comparing it favorably to the original Top Gun.

Top Gun: Maverick was also a hit at the box office, and it has taken in a gross of nearly $693 million in the United States, according to Box Office Mojo.

International revenue for the feature has taken its total gross to just over $1.4 billion.

The movie is currently the highest-grossing film released this year, and it has reached the sixth spot on the most-earning movies of all time. 

Top Gun: Maverick is also the most profitable movie of Tom Cruise’s long-running career.
