‘Let’s just call it what it was: It was an abortion,’ Chrissy said. ‘An abortion to save my life for a baby that had absolutely no chance. And to be honest, I never, ever put that together until, actually, a few months ago.’

The couple had said that Jack died as a result of complications caused by a partial placental abruption, which is when the placenta detaches from the womb depriving the baby of oxygen and causing heavy bleeding in the mother.

She spoke candidly about coming to terms with her 2020 abortion while appearing at Propper Daley’s ‘A Day of Unreasonable Conversation’ summit in Beverly Hills.

‘Two years ago, when I was pregnant with Jack, John and my third child, I had to make a lot of difficult and heartbreaking decisions,’ the star began.

‘It became very clear around halfway through that he would not survive, and that I wouldn’t either without any medical intervention.’

Although she’d long considered Jack’s death a miscarriage, Chrissy said that it was her husband John who helped her realize that she’d actually had an abortion.

The revelation came amid the shocking Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe V. Wade, which protected the right to an abortion, this past June.

Chrissy admitted that it came as a ‘shock’ to her.

‘I fell silent, feeling weird that I hadn’t made sense of it that way. I told the world we had a miscarriage, the world agreed we had a miscarriage, all the headlines said it was a miscarriage.

‘And I became really frustrated that I didn’t, in the first place, say what it was, and I felt silly that it had taken me over a year to actually understand that we had had an abortion,’ she admitted.

The pair share daughter Luna Simone, six, and son Miles Theodore, four.

Why abortions can be life-saving

Abortions are usually carried out because women don’t want to have a baby, either because their pregnancy was unplanned or unwanted.

They differ to miscarriages, which are unintentional and occur during the first 23 weeks of gestation.

However, in some cases abortions are an emergency procedure that is needed to save the life of the mother.

In England, Scotland and Wales, where a woman’s life is at risk or the baby has a severe disability, there is no time limit on access to abortion, under the 1967 Abortion Act.

Conditions that may qualify include serious infections and severe cases of pre-eclampsia, in which a woman develops very high blood pressure and is at risk for stroke.

Another reason it can be needed is for placental abruption, which is when the placenta detaches from the womb depriving the baby of oxygen and causing heavy bleeding in the mother.

But under the same act, if there is no risk present, women are only able to legally terminate a pregnancy up to the 23-week mark.

The abortion is considered legal if performed by a doctor, authorised by two doctors acting ‘in good faith’, and meets at least one qualifying factor.

In US it is a different picture following the Supreme Court’s landmark decision to overturn the Roe v Wade ruling.

That highly controversial move ended American women’s legal right to have abortions and left it up to individual states to decide if they are lawful.

Two dozen conservative states either already have or are considered likely to introduce new abortion restrictions or bans.

This includes Georgia, which bans abortion at about six weeks of pregnancy — before many women even know they are pregnant.
