The Season Finale of Grey’s Anatomy went out with a bang. Literally. The show opened with a warning that the episode is violent. Violent and very bloody is a better description.
Meredith Grey opens up the finale with a telling statement:
“For most people a hospital is a scary place. A hostile place. A place where bad things happen. Most people would prefer church or school or home. But I grew up here. When my mom was on rounds I learned to read in the OR gallery. I played in the morgue. I colored with crayons on old ER charts. The hospital was my church. My school. My home. The hospital was my safe place. My sanctuary. I love it here. Correction – loved it here.”
The hospital is chaotic when the husband of a patient that died (in a previous episode), Mr. Clark, is looking for Derek. He wants revenge on losing his wife. When he can’t find Derek he asks Reid where Dr. Shepherd is and she responds by telling him to find a nurse to help him. He shoots her in the head. When Karev walks over he shoots him in the chest. Karev crawls to the elevator to try and get some help. It seems like he is laying in the elevator for hours.
Meredith is pregnant. She hasn’t told Derek yet and is waiting for the right moment.
Christina asks Owen straight up if he loves Teddie. When he doesn’t answer him – she tells him its over.
When Dr. Shepherd finds out about Reid being shot – the hospital is put on lock down. No one can come in the hospital and no one can leave the hospital.
Mr. Clark gets bold and shoots a nurse in front of a number of people including Lexi and Mark, who run to the elevator only to find Alex in a pool of blood. Lexi and Mark have to do surgery without anesthesia. Painful. Alex needs a transfusion. Lexi leaves the room to get blood. While she is gone Alex tells Mark that he needs to enjoy life more. Eat more bacon and have more sex.
Lexi runs into Mr. Clark when she is in the hallway. Mr. Clark goes to shoot her since she unplugged his wife’s respirator. Lexi is saved when Mr. Clark is shot by the police. When Lexi returns she tells Alex she loves him. Mark witnesses Lexi professing her love.
Alex is delirious and thinks Lexi is Izzie. He tells Izzie to never leave him again and that he loves her.
Dr. Bailey hides under the bed of a patient when she finds out the shooter is on the floor. When the shooter asks Dr. Percy if he is a surgeon and the doctor responds yes – he gets shot. The shooter finds Bailey but when he asks her if she is a surgeon she answers no – saving her life. Dr. Bailey is trying to save Dr. Percy’s life but she needs an OR. She drags his body using a sheet and gets to the elevator only to find the elevator isn’t working. Bailey loses it. There is nothing she can do to save his life. When Charles (Dr. Percy) asks Bailey if he is going to die she is honest and says yes. It’s heartbreaking to watch.
In the midst of the chaos Arizona decides to talk to Callie about their relationship. It’s a conversation that is painful and ends up with the two of them fighting.
The shooter (Mr. Clark) finally finds the person he is looking for – Derek Shepherd. Derek tells Mr. Clark that he became a doctor to save lives not to play god. Derek tells him that he is a human being and he is flawed. He convinces Dr. Clark that he is a good man and Mr. Clark puts the gun down -but only for a moment – when an intern, April Kepner, walks over and interrupts “the moment”. Mr. Clark shoots Derek in the chest. Meredith and Christina witness the shooting.
Derek needs surgery but none of the attending doctors are around. Christina has to step up to the plate to perform the surgery. Christina tells Meredith that she is not welcome in the operating room. Christina realizes the damage is in the aorta or as she says, “the hardest freakin’ repair in the world”. The bullet is lodged right next to the aorta.
Teddie and Owen are walking through the hall with a patient. Teddie is begging for Owen to choose between her and Christina. Owen claims to choose no one. When Teddie and Owen get out of the hospital – Owen realizes that Christina is “the one” and runs back into the hospital to find her.
Mr. Clark finds Christina in the OR and puts a gun to her head demanding she stop operating on Derek. Owen walks in as Mr. Clark has the gun to Christina’s head.
Meredith walks into the operating room and offers to sacrifice herself. But when Owen tries to get Mr. Clark away from Christina – Owen gets shot.
Christina and Avery trick Mr. Clark into thinking that Derek died. Mr. Clark leaves the OR and Christina and Avery continue the surgery.
Christina tells Meredith to go operate on Owen. Just as she starts the surgery she begins to bleed and has a miscarriage.
Dr. Webber snuck back into the hospital and comes face to face with Mr. Clark. Mr. Clark is holding a gun and a flask with one bullet left in his gun. Mr. Clark was going to shoot Dr. Webber and then himself but he only has one bullet left. What is he going to do? Mr. Clark keeps offering the chief a drink but even with all this pressure – he just pours the vodka on the floor and tells Mr. Clark to make his choice. Dr. Webber considers death to be the end of a beautiful journey and for Mr. Clark death would be an after life with his wife. Or jail if he opts to use it on the chief.
As the show comes to a close – Derek goes into defib but is saved by Christina and Callie tells Arizona that she won’t have kids if it means living without her. Arizona tells Callie they can have 10 kids. Dr. Weber is okay. This must mean that Mr. Clark is dead.
The season finale was a bit violent – I prefer “happily ever after”. What did you think??

What an epic put up – really very helpful! An entire lot of appreciated!
I’ve just started watching Grey’s Anatomy, and I was very upset by the season finale.
It was too violent. More mindless violence on TV. What’s the point anyway.
I’m blogging about it on my blog The Survive and Thrive Boomer Guide.
Rita
that was probably the best season finale of any show I have ever seen in my entire life!
I LOVED the season finale!!! It was intense! Kudos to everyone on the show. Ms. Rhymes gave us a showto carry us through the summer. Can’t wait till next season. Great job guys!!
