Was Diane Sawyer drunk while she anchored the 2012 United States election coverage?

The famous news anchor shocked viewers during her ABC News’ election coverage, leaving many to wonder if she was drunk on live television.

The normally prim and proper newswoman was propped up on her elbows, rambling, laughing and sometimes making no sense at all.   Her co-anchor, George Stephanopoulos remained stoic throughout the broadcast and looked dazed, confused and embarrassed while Sawyer was speaking.

Social media was quick to poke fun at Sawyer, speculating she was either drunk, on  prescription painkillers or both.

One twitter user stated, “And Diane Sawyer declares tonight’s winner is … chardonnay!”

One of Sawyer’s friends claimed she was just tired from an exhausting week of election coverage saying,

“She spent a number of sleepless nights preparing and rehearsing.”

Sawyer’s performance even prompted the creation of a Twitter account named Drunk Diane Sawyer, which collected nearly 1,000 followers in minutes.

Diane isn’t the first celebrity to be caught acting less than sober.
