Zendaya Accepts Giuliana’s Apology- Was She Being Condescending?
Giuliana Rancic has come out and publicly apologized for a comment that she made on “Fashion Police” regarding Zendaya Monday evening. Referring to the singer/actresses new dread lock/braid looks that she donned at the 2015 Academy Awards, Rancic said that she looked like she smelled of “patchouli” and “weed.” That did not sit well with Zendaya at all, who felt that Rancic threw a racial slur at the eighteen year old. She publicly put out a letter regarding her feelings on social media:
This caused celebs such as Kerry Washington and Khloe Kardashian to applaud Zendaya’s bravery. But there was much more going on as post-filming, “Fashion Police” co-host Kelly Osbourne took to Twitter to say that she was ready to leave the show because of the racism. She noted that she was a friend of Zendaya and was giving everyone involved a day to resolve the incident. As I have mentioned before, if Kelly was so offended, she should have said something during filming as opposed to jumping on the bandwagon.
Rancic did release a heartfelt apology on Twitter, saying: “Dear @Zendaya, I’m sorry I offended you and others. I was referring to a bohemian chic look. Had NOTHING to do with race and NEVER would!!!” Rancic then went LIVE on-air to address the situation: “I want to say to Zendaya, and anyone else out there that I have hurt, that I am so, so sincerely sorry. This really has been a learning experience for me. I’ve learned a lot today, and this incident has taught me to be a lot more aware of clichés and stereotypes, how much damage they can do – and that I am responsible, as we all are, to not perpetuate them further.” Even though I personally was not mad at Rancic at all as I believed that she was comparing Zendaya to a hippie not acting racist.
Zendaya seemingly accepted the apology but did she really? Here is what she had to say via Twitter: “I appreciate your apology and I’m glad it was a learning experience for you and for the network. I hope that others negatively affected by her words can also find it in their hearts to accept her apology as well.” That kind of seems like a backwards acceptance or like Ms. Zendaya is talking down to Giuliana, would you agree? Giuliana already felt like crap about the situation or so it seemed and then Zendaya accepts it with some sort of conditions.
As for the fate of “Fashion Police,” that is up in the air but there are reports it will go on a hiatus for a few weeks. Melissa Rivers, daughter of the late Joan Rivers who started the show and basically created the question of “who are you wearing?” posted a photo today of Zendaya sitting on her mother’s lap. Some are saying that Giuliana was trying to be like Joan with her comments but no one, not even Kathy Griffin can replace Joan. Maybe it is time to just put the show to rest as well!
UPDATE: Kelly Osbourne has decided that she will stay on the show as everyone has apologized and to her, that is more than enough. Uh-huh. Maybe she realized that she could be easily replaced!
