The movie, which has been locked away for years,  is not necessarily causing the buzz, but what Blancett revealed during an interview with Variety. When asked if it was her first time playing a lesbian. Blanchett answered by saying,

“In film — or in real life?”

Needless to say, this has sparked a lot of buzz because she followed up by saying she has been in relationships with women “many times.” She didn’t elaborate following the “many times.”
Blanchett, who is married to playwright Andrew Upton, didn’t care about her character’s sexuality saying, “she never thought about it” and “I think there are a lot of people that exist like that who don’t feel the need to shout things from the rafters.”

Now that Cate Blanchett has our attention what she really wants us to focus on is the gender inequality in Hollywood. While she believes it is present, she also believes there is hope with a number of women reaching a “certain place in the industry,” Who are those women? Meryl Streep, Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman. Blanchett has not desire to discuss the topic of gender inequality any more but says, “it needs to be discussed.”

This isn’t the first time that the topic of inequality has come up in Hollywood. Patricia Arquette brought the topic to the forefront when she made a statement during her Oscar speech for Best Supporting Actress for the movie Boyhood saying, “To every woman who gave birth, to every taxpayer and citizen of this nation, we have fought for everybody else’s equal rights. It is our time to have wage equality once and for all, and equal rights for women in the United States of America!”

Top earning women in Hollywood tend to earn half of what the top men earn. While we agree women and men should be payed equally, our hearts are not completely broken for the top actors and actresses in Hollywood. While the leading men can earn as much as $20 million for a film and leading women make $10 – 15 million, it is more than most people make in a life time. #justsayin
