Video: Caitlyn Jenner’s Acceptance Speech at ESPY Awards
The biggest night in sports took place tonight, July 15, 2015. The ESPY Awards celebrated the best athletes, the teams and moments of the year. The ESPY’s also pays tribute to the heroic actions of athletes who show courage off the field.
One of the most noted honorees of the evening is Caitlyn Jenner, who received the Arthur Ashe award. The one time Olympic champion showed her same strength of character when she sat down with Diane Sawyer back in April to tell the world she would no longer be living her life as Bruce Jenner but would be transitioning to a woman and coming out as Caitlyn Jenner.
Since then Caitlyn Jenner has been seen out and about living her life. Her appearance at the ESPY’s is the first time she has spoken in a public forum as her new self, Caitlyn Jenner. ESPN is honoring Caitlyn in order “to celebrate Bruce becoming Caitlyn.”
Many people have wondered why Jenner is the recipient of the Arthur Ashe Award and celebrities are no different. Terrell Owens commented about the award saying, “I think there is a time and place for everything. Being that this is a sports event, one can argue is this really a part of what we do? Probably not, but do I think he has been very courageous in what he has done … absolutely.”
While there are some people who think Caitlyn Jenner was chosen for the award because she’s the talk of the world right now there are others who believe she is a successful athlete and deserves the credit. She is not the successful athlete, Bruce Jenner was the Olympic Gold Medal winner, not Caitlyn. Bruce Jenner is no more.
In any case, Caitlyn Jenner was the talk of the evening. She did not walk the red carpet or give any interviews prior to her speech, making the anticipation of her acceptance speech for the Arthur Ashe award that much more exciting. She also didn’t sit in the audience, not being seen until she was introduced as the recipient of the Arthur Ashe Award.
Caitlyn told the audience the last few months have been a whirlwind of so many experiences. She said she has never felt more pressure than she has in the post few months, picking out her outfit, her hair and preparing for the ESPY Awards.
Caitlyn spoke about the power of the spotlight saying, ‘with attention comes responsibility. What you say and do is absorbed about millions of people.’ She plans on doing what ever she can to promote a simple idea,’accepting people for who they are and accepting people’s differences.’ She continued by saying, ‘We start with education. Learn as much as you can about another person to understand them better.’ Finally, she said, ‘This transition has been harder on than anything you can imagine. Trans people deserve your respect. And from that respect comes a more compassion community, empathetic society and a better world.’
Caitlyn’s very famous family, Kendall and Kylie Jenner and Khloe and Kim Kardashian were there to support her. He thanked them and expressed how grateful he was to have them all in his life.
