General Hospital Star Blasts Viola Davis Speech-She’s Never Been Discriminated Against
General Hospital star Nancy Lee Grahn took to Twitter during last night Emmys to blast Viola Davis for her speech. Davis made Emmy history by being the first black woman to win the award for Best Lead Actress in a Drama, but her speech made Grahn see red.
In her speech, Davis touched on the diversity issue facing Hollywood by quoting Harriet Tubman saying, “The only think that separates women of color from anyone else is simply opportunity. You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there,” before going on to thank Shonda Rhimes and show runner Peter Norwalk for “redefining what it means to be black.”
While the audience reacted with enthusiasm, Grahn took to witter to write, “Im a f—ing actress for 40 yrs None of us get respect or opportunity we deserve. Emmy not venue 4 racial opportunity. ALL women belittled.”
She faced an immediate backlash from followers. In one response Grahn tweeted, “I think she’s the bees knees…she has never been discriminated against.”
Grahn later deleted the Tweet and apologized to “anyone who I offended. I’m women advocate since I became one. After reading responses, I hear u and my tweet was badly phrased.”
She added a second apology in which she tweeted, “I need to check my own privilege,” and later acknowledged the anger saying, “I’ve taken a whooping 2night and as u can see will rightfully stay up all night to talk to you.”
However she was upset that the Twitterverse appeared to be categorizing her as a racist for comments she believes were not articulated properly. Realizing that 140 characters or less may not be the ideal place to have such a delicate conversation Grahn tweeted, “30 yrs as an advocate 4 human rights & now i’m a racist. Color me heartbroken. Twitter can bring out the best & sadly tonight the worst of us.”
The actress has played the popular character Alexis Davis on General Hospital for over 20 years. She has actively supported reproductive rights as well as the LGBTQ community.
Will fans call for a ban on Nancy Lee Grahn after her comments or will she be believed that she didn’t “phrase” her words properly? Is she a racist or just frustrated over the lack of roles for all women? Let us know what you think here at Haveuheard.
